Vancouver BC, January 15, 2021 – Lions Gate Risk Management Group, a leading security and risk anagement firm, is warning of the potential risks within supply chain distribution for the COVID-19 vaccine as Pfizer announces delays to production. Professional thieves have long targeted valuable medicines and as the supply diminishes the risks are increasing. This coupled with the magnitude of the distribution undertaking places vaccines at theft risk. Supply chain security, particularly transit security, is extremely vulnerable and truck stops, distribution centers, hospitals and airports with subpar physical security measures will also be vulnerable.
Michael Franklin, Vice President Risk Management and Community Safety states “ The COVID vaccine is likely to be heavily targeted for theft for a few reasons. First, there has not been enough supply in the early stages of distribution. Second, the substances are ultra-high profile. There are black and grey markets — facilitated by fake wholesalers and organized theft rings — they already exist for oncology,
arthritis and other drugs that don’t seem like obvious targets.”
The rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine is a significant event that is marked by limited supply with increased product demand, potentially creating a grey market for supplies, particularly in countries with high rates of cargo theft. In early December 2020 in Lyon, France, INTERPOL issued a global alert to law enforcement across its 194 member countries warning them to prepare for organized crime networks
targeting COVID-19 vaccines, both physically and online. Due to COVID-19, there is more vulnerability in the supply chain than ever. Collusion remains a major problem and incentives to make quick money with employees on potentially reduced incomes or with low pay, coupled with an increase in challenges to mental health issues, are compelling.
